The Twin Deficits That Threaten Modi’s India – Businessweek

CHINDIA ALERT: You'll be living in their world, very soon

For Narendra Modi, getting elected as prime minister of India is the easy part. Now comes dealing with the twin deficits—in the national budget and in foreign trade—that endanger the world’s largest democracy.

Opposition leader and India's next prime minister Narendra Modi greets supporters during a visit to seek his mother's blessings in Gandhinagar, the western Indian state of Gujarat on May 16

Overnight poll results show that Modi’s opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies scored the biggest Indian election win in 30 years. “Voters tired of sluggish economic growth and corruption handed a historic defeat to the Gandhi dynasty that has dominated politics since the country’s founding,” Bloomberg News reported today.

In April, the International Monetary Fund issued a 66-page report on India that highlighted the challenges facing India. The report notes that India is not the only Group of 20 country with high budget deficits, nor is it the only one with high trade deficits. What’s unusual is that it’s high in both.

Microsoft claims SAP enterprise apps for Azure

Gigaom

If you’re pitching your cloud infrastructure as the cloud for enterprises, you need to show it runs enterprise applications. So that’s why it’s important for Microsoft to be able to claim SAP applications run on Azure. And so they will: By the end of June, SAP’s Business Suite, All-in-One, its Mobile Platform and the developer edition of HANA will be available on Microsoft’s cloud, the two companies said early Monday.

The two companies also pledged better ties between SAP’s back-office applications and Microsoft Office and between SAP BusinessObjects analytics and Microsoft Power BI. SAP will talk more about the allegiance at SAPPHIRE NOW next month and we’ll ask Guthrie more about enterprise applications running on Azure when he’s on stage at Structure on June 18.

Microsoft EVP of cloud and enterprise Scott Guthrie. Microsoft EVP of cloud and enterprise Scott Guthrie.

Microsoft needs this; most of SAP’s enterprise applications are already available on Amazon Web Services. Face it, ERP isn’t…

Moreland, Rios Help Rangers Beat Blue Jays 6-2

CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

ARLINGTON (AP) — Mitch Moreland will be the guy at first base for Texas if Prince Fielder’s neck problem keeps him out for any length of time.

His bat was a big boost a few hours after a players-only meeting for a slumping team trying to halt a slide down the AL West standings.

Moreland hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning, Alex Rios had a two-run triple and the Rangers avoided a three-game sweep with a 6-2 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.

“I’d like to see him do that more often, then he can get more playing time,” manager Ron Washington said after Moreland doubled in his final at-bat. “Mitch is a big part and today he stepped up huge for us.”

Washington expects Fielder to play in the next game Tuesday night against Seattle after he had an injection designed to ease the pain…
